The debate over Auckland's waterfront continues, with a story in the NZ Herald saying the city of sails needs more than a wharf to encourage cruise ships:
"Welcome to New Zealand and Auckland's Queen's Wharf - party central for the Rugby World Cup if you are talking to Prime Minister John Key, or a poor excuse for a second cruise ship terminal for the country's largest and most important cruise port if you are talking to cruise industry lobbyist Craig Harris."
The need for more facilities certainly hasn't slowed down visitor numbers -- the article states that in the 1996/97 cruise season "fewer than 20,000 people visited New Zealand by cruise ship" -- and "by 2008/09 it had grown to a record 116,000".

This season the numbers are expected to be down to 105,000 as a result of the economic recession but next season cruise visitors are expected to top 130,000 people. And Australian cruise passengers have grown from 26,000 to 42,000 in the last year alone.

With more and more ships visiting each year, there's a cruise to suit everyone's calendar. To book your Cruise New Zealand go to
